SS Ventnor Talk | Hannah King

August 2 | 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Hannah is a member of the Ng/Wu whānau, descendants of Ng Jor Ching, whose kōiwi—headed for reburial in China—were on board the SS Ventnor when she sank off the coast of the Hokianga in 1902.

At this special talk, Hannah will speak about the SS Ventnor, and the connections made in recent years, as part of the ancestral landscape of the Chinese community and her whānau in Aotearoa.

Hannah’s family has a long history in the Ashburton region, including being among the founders of the Ng King Bros Chinese Market Garden Settlement. Hannah works as a lawyer in Auckland, and is also a singer and actor who is currently composing a song cycle for solo soprano based on her personal experience of the SS Ventnor kōrero.
