Lecture: The Kelliher Paintings – a New Zealand Phenomenon

Wednesday 31 August, 5.30pm - 7pm

Free
Dick Frizzell Two Sheds and a Power Pole 2009. Oil on canvas, purchased by the Kelliher Arts Trust 2009

We’re thrilled to have Dr. Mark Stocker coming to Ashburton to share some of his knowledge and insight into our upcoming exhibition Rare and Unrivalled Beauty: Landscape Paintings from the Kelliher Art Trust Collection. Mark’s recently published article in Art New Zealand, ’This is New Zealand: The Kelliher Collection Tours the Mainland’ (Autumn 2022), delves into the history and some of the controversy that still surrounds the Kelliher Collection, and celebrates their ‘unrivalled beauty’. As Stocker says in his Art New Zealand article: “What immediately impresses is how admirably crafted many of the exhibits (whether ancient or modern) really are: they know their stuff, what to represent and how to represent it.”

Cost: Free; light refreshments will be served.

Dr Mark Stocker is a semi-retired art historian who lives in Christchurch.  An academic at Canterbury and Otago for nearly 30 years, his last job was Curator, Historical International Art at Te Papa. Mark has 250 publications to his credit, and his most recent book is When Britain Went Decimal: The Coinage of 1971 (Spink/ Royal Mint).  He also writes a monthly online column on historical pop music.
