SUMMARY:Witching Words: A Poetry Competition
DESCRIPTION:Witching Words: A Poetry Competition invites visitors of all ages to step into a world where language shimmers and imagination leads the way. Inspired by the playful poetry of Margaret Mahy and the evocative illustrations of David Elliot\, this competition encourages you to create your own poem using words\, rhymes\, and ideas drawn from the Rokowhiria Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum exhibition\, The Word Witch – Flights of Fancy. \nChoose a poem or illustration that speaks to you\, then\, like a word witch at work\, mix and match language\, play with rhymes\, and create something wonderfully your own. Whether you craft a tiny spell\, tell a fun story\, or dream up something entirely unexpected\, Witching Words celebrates the joy of creativity and the magic of creating poetry. Let the poems you discover spark new ones of your own — and see where the magic takes you. \nOpen to all ages\, this competition will end on August 23 at a poetry event where entries will be judged by David Elliot. Select poems will be published fortnightly in The Ashburton Courier newspaper from April 16 onward. \nCollect your entry form from Rokowhiria Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum to start creating your masterpiece! \n  \nImage: David Elliot\, The Word Witch\, Inside Cover\, 2008/2009\, mixed media illustration on paper.

SUMMARY:In Plain Site: Memorials and their Stories
DESCRIPTION:From traditional monuments to functional buildings\, and even living trees\, public memorials take many shapes and forms. In Whakatere Ashburton many commemorate wartime sacrifice\, while others acknowledge colonial settlement and industry\, or the original site of the famed mātai tree\, Hinepaaka. \nThis exhibition tells the stories behind local memorials\, who created them and why\, using objects and images from our collection to illustrate the people and events commemorated\, as well as memorials now lost to time. What do these sites of memory tell us about our town and district? What do they commemorate\, and for whom?

SUMMARY:Documenting our Heritage: Mid & South Canterbury
DESCRIPTION:The diverse and beautiful Mid & South Canterbury regions are home to 223 entries on the New Zealand Heritage List/Rārangi Kōrero. \nOver the summer\, Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga’s photo competition encouraged photographers to capture these amazing listed locations across Waitaha Canterbury. The resulting exhibition showcases an impressive selection of images submitted by photographers ranging in skill level from amateur hobbyists to professional photographers. \nThe variation in these images is stunning\, revealing the rich history of this region\, where seasonal food gathering\, agriculture and industry formed the bedrock of resourceful communities. Listed grand homesteads\, Māori rock art sites\, early farm buildings\, cob cottages\, churches\, war memorials\, hotels\, main-street commercial buildings and industrial structures are spread throughout the Ashburton\, Timaru\, Waimate and Mackenzie districts. \nImage: Aigantighe Art Gallery\, image courtesy of Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga \n
