DESCRIPTION:On Sunday 07 April at 2pm\, Iain Cheesman will be visiting the Gallery and Museum to speak more about his foyer wall artwork The River Is.  \nThe River Is uses balls of wool in a sculptural manner\, creating a river-like scene of divining sticks\, accompanied by a poem. The work is inspired by a childhood memory in which Iain’s grandmother’s friend uses a wooden divining stick to search for water underground\, speaking to the value of water that cannot be measured or owned. \nJoin us for special talk with Iain to hear more about the inspiration behind his work and be among the first to purchase the individual divining sticks. Proceeds from the sale of The River Is go to the Braided River Aid.

DESCRIPTION:To celebrate our exhibition A New Era: Ng King Bros. Chinese Market Garden Settlement\, join us for a talk with Arlene Baird\, a heritage consultant based in Mid Canterbury. \nArlene Baird is a heritage consultant based in Mid Canterbury. She has over 25 years’ experience in the heritage sector\, initially in the UK where she specialised in restoration and adaptive reuse of historic buildings\, then in New Zealand where she provides heritage planning and consultancy services to individuals\, businesses and local authorities. Over the past year she has also been standing in as Acting Area Manager for the Canterbury West Coast team of Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga. \nArlene has been involved with the Ng King Brothers site in Ashburton since 2014\, liaising with Council\, Heritage New Zealand and the Ng King descendants\, and project managing the stabilisation of the buildings and refurbishment of the site in a way that shares its amazing story.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk with Janet Abbott on March 06 at 6pm! \n\n\nWas Ōtautahi Christchurch the centre of culture in Aotearoa in the first half of the 20th century? The city produced some of our best-known artists of the period\, including Sydney Thompson\, Rita Angus\, Rata Lovell-Smith\, Bill Sutton and Rhona Haszard. There were also the Canterbury School of Regional Landscape Painters who painted the local landscape in an Impressionistic way. \n\n\nJanet will give an illustrated talk looking at some of the better-known and lesser-known artists who flourished in Christchurch during the troubled decades of the early 20th century. \n\n\nWednesday 06 March | 6pm \nPlease note that this talk was previously advertised as being on March 10. DESCRIPTION:Sixteen years ago the descendants of the men who founded the Ng King Bros. Chinese Market Garden expressed their desire to share their land and the legacy of their buildings and stories with the community. Our new exhibition A New Era: Ng King Bros. Chinese Market Garden Settlement celebrates the restoration and February 2024 re-opening of this significant local site to the public. \nNow listed by Pouhere Taonga Heritage New Zealand as a Category 1 Historic Place\, the Allens Road settlement was once one of the largest commercial market gardens in Aotearoa\, operative from 1921 until 1964. Explore the history and archaeology of this important Hakatere Ashburton site and the Ng King family’s part in the social history of Chinese settlers who migrated to Aotearoa New Zealand\, including how they lived\, contributed to and integrated into society.

SUMMARY:Marian Maguire | Exhibition opening and artist talk
DESCRIPTION:At the opening of The Enlightenment Project (expanded)\, Christchurch-based artist Marian Maguire will talk about the ideas and impetus behind this series\, which aims to make sense of this important age of European history\, and the worldwide reverberations that resulted. This exhibition builds on the initial showing of The Enlightenment Project in 2022 and Maguire has created additional works which extend into prehistory\, reflect on current reality\, and provide a counterpoint to the Western world view. \nMarian Maguire is best known for her lithographs and etchings which combine ancient Greek vase painting with New Zealand colonial history. Alongside historical and figurative imagery\, she has produced many exhibitions of abstract geometric paintings or invented plant drawings in which her interest in patterns\, and the disruption of patterns\, becomes evident.

SUMMARY:Talks | Chris Pole and Merv Falconer
DESCRIPTION:In this double-header event\, we’ll be hearing from artist Chris Pole about his current exhibition Crooked Spur\, and Merv Falconer\, Chief Pilot for Mount Cook Airways from 1974-84\, in connection with our From Tasman Glacier to Table Service exhibition. \nIn Crooked Spur\, Chris Pole’s unconventional landscape paintings inspired by his travels throughout the mid-Canterbury and upper Rakitata regions\, use a diagonal ‘slice’ to offset the imagery. These paintings bring the viewer into the landscape as a participant rather than an observer. Merv Falconer will give a presentation on the history and development of ski plane operations in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park and Haupapa Tasman Glacier from the mid-1950s to the 2000s.

DESCRIPTION:To celebrate our current exhibition Suffrage in Stitches\, join us on 28 January for a fascinating talk about Kate Sheppard and the suffrage movement. \nHelen Osborne will be visiting us from Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House in Ōtautahi Christchurch\, the family home of Kate Sheppard between 1888 and 1902 and the headquarters of the New Zealand Suffrage Campaign. This site\, now owned by Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga\, was where the pioneering suffragist and her fellow campaigners organised their movement to secure the vote for women. Helen will give an illustrated talk about Kate Sheppard’s personal life and how she became entwined in the temperance and suffrage movement. \nSince 2020\, Helen has cared for and managed Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House\, which is open as a house museum and garden for visitors to learn about suffrage and the life story and work of Kate Sheppard.

DESCRIPTION:At this upcoming artist talk\, celebrated Ashburton author and illustrator David Elliot will share insights into his current exhibition Wind and Waves.  \nIn this exhibition\, people and creatures\, in\, on\, above and near the ocean become characters that are interwoven with histories of exploration and scientific research\, as well as mythological tales and high sea adventure. Kōpūtai Port Chalmers and Ōtākou Otago Harbour serve as inspiration for many of the works\, as do the natural elements\, such as wind\, which are personified as giant entities that command the weather. Other works look beyond Ōtākou\, and informed by David’s love of maps and old books\, traverse a watery expanse to explore domains both real and imagined.

DESCRIPTION:The Great Santa Hunt is back on at the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum these school holidays with a special late night opening event on Wednesday 20 December\, so get your torches ready!\n\n\n \n\n\nAll the lights will be turned off\, so you’ll need your torches for the late night opening hunt to find the sneaky Santas in their new hiding spots across the museum.\n\n\n \n\n\nThe late night event will run from 5pm – 7pm\, and you can head over to the Library after the Santa Hunt at 7:15pm for some Christmas stories and songs as we get into the Christmas spirit!\n\n\n \n\n\nThe Santas will be hiding all summer from 21 December until 31 January\, so you can come back during opening hours while the lights are on and search for any you missed on opening night – or have a go at finding them all again\, it may trickier than you think!\n\n\n \n\n\nExpert Santa-hunters who can find them all will earn a badge and go in the draw to win a special prize\, so good luck and happy hunting.\n\n\n \n\n\nThe Art Gallery and Museum is open 10am-4pm daily. SUMMARY:Opening: Chris Pole\, Crooked Spur | Suffrage in Stitches
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of two new exhibitions; Chris Pole’s Crooked Spur\, and touring exhibition Suffrage in Stitches. \nIn Crooked Spur Chris Pole has sought inspiration from excursions throughout the volatile Southern Alps\, Kā Tiritiri-o-te-moana\, resulting in paintings that show a diagonal ‘slice’ across the landscape. The overall effect of these works is to be within the landscape as a ‘participant’ rather than ‘observer’\, therefore seeing the landscape from multiple angles at once. Departing from traditional landscape genre painting through the introduction of flattening and disjunction\, these works engage with the peculiar nature of visual perception\, which is prone to error and invention. \nCurated by Wellington Museum\, Suffrage in Stitches features a 300-metre long textile work made up of 546 individual panels\, representing the length of the Suffrage Petition from 1893 (274 metres long with a page count of 546). In 2018\, in partnership with St Vincent de Paul and Vinnies Re Sew\, Wellington Museum held workshops that asked participants to use a needle and thread to create something inspired by women. The resulting 546 textile panels came together to create Suffrage in Stitches\, honouring whakapapa\, history\, and the power of New Zealanders. \nCelebrate the opening of both of these exhibitions on Sunday 10 December at 2pm. All are welcome at this free event and light refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:From Tasman Glacier to Table Service
DESCRIPTION:For three Hakatere Ashburton men\, Wilf Holland\, Allen Kelly and Jack Pattle\, an adventure awaited them at Aoraki Mt Cook in March 1958. They were tasked with cutting three blocks of clean white ice from a glacier and preparing them for shipping to New York. \nFrom Tasman Glacier to Table Service follows the journey of the ice from Aotearoa New Zealand to New York City\, where it was intended to be used to cool drinks at a ‘New Zealand Night’ dinner hosted by the Overseas Press Club of America. \nCome and experience an epic journey taken by van\, plane\, boat and rail\, through which a fragile piece of Aotearoa travels further than was ever thought possible.

SUMMARY:Embroidery workshop with Saskia Bunce-Rath
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday 02 December for a very special embroidery workshop with Ōtautahi-based artist Saskia Bunce-Rath! \nSaskia graduated with a Masters in painting from the Ilam School of Fine Arts\, University of Canterbury\, and brings this training into her current textile work\, drawing inspiration both from European art history and more contemporary Aotearoa New Zealand artists like Bill Hammond. Her current exhibition\, eating stars together at dusk\, is her first solo exhibition at a public art gallery and is open until 10 December. \nIn this workshop\, Saskia will give a rare insight into her practice and share how she transforms her preliminary paintings and sketches into embroidery works. She will then guide you on how to do this with your own drawing\, and you will spend time embroidering together and working through any questions you may have. At the end of the workshop\, you will be able to share your creation with the group! \nThis will also be a great opportunity to get a first look at our upcoming textile and embroidery exhibition Suffrage in Stitches\, which will be opening on the same day as the workshop. \nAll materials are provided\, but you are welcome to bring along reference images. \nBooking is required as spaces are limited\, and there is a ticket fee of $20. When the Electoral Act 1893 was passed\, this landmark legislation saw New Zealand become the first self-governing country in the world to give all women the right to vote. \nCurated by Wellington Museum\, Suffrage in Stitches features a 300-metre long textile work made up of 546 individual panels\, representing the length of the main Suffrage Petition presented to Parliament in 1893 (274 metres long with a page count of 546). \n\n\nIn 2018\, in partnership with St Vincent de Paul and Vinnies Re Sew initiative\, Wellington Museum held workshops that asked participants to use a needle and thread to create something inspired by women. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of three new exhibitions: Iain Cheesman’s Nurture Nature\, Saskia Bunce-Rath’s eating stars together at dusk\, and Hakatere Ceramics’ From the Earth.  \nIain Cheesman’s new exhibition Nurture Nature celebrates the act of slowing down and looking. Within the gallery space\, painting\, sculpture\, embroidery\, taxidermy and poetry sit together\, creating a landscape for the viewer to navigate. Cheesman introduces birds as the focal point of his landscape\, and as a bird watcher himself\, hopes that the viewer will take on this role of nature observer within the exhibition. \nIn Saskia Bunce-Rath’s solo exhibition eating stars together at dusk\, thread is deployed\, as she says\, in ‘a painterly way’ to create images that evoke myth\, fantasy\, wonder and dream. By infusing the recognisable with the remarkable in brightly-coloured tapestries of various scales\, and with poetic titles that only add to the mystery\, she creates cosmologies for the strange creatures that inhabit her jewel-like works. \nFrom the Earth is an exhibition by the Hakatere Ceramics Group. Started in 2015\, the Hakatere Ceramics and Pottery Group of Ashburton is local group of ceramic enthusiasts who aim to create a welcoming\, educational and encouraging environment for those who want to learn more about the art of clay. This year there will also be a display from guest artist Hannah Kidd. \nJoin us on October 18 at 6pm to celebrate the opening of these three exhibitions. All are welcome at this free event and light refreshments will be served.

DESCRIPTION:We are getting festive with our annual District Card competition. This year we are taking inspiration from the photographs on display in our current exhibition Ngā Taonga o Hakatere: One Hundred Years of Forest & Bird and will create cards using collage materials. \nThe competition is open to all children between 5-13 years and will be judged by Ashburton’s Mayor Neil Brown. The winning design will be the official holiday card of the Ashburton District Council\, while the People’s Choice winner will be featured as the AAGM card. Both winners will receive 25 copies of their card to send to loved ones. \nFinished entries will be on display at the Art Gallery and Museum from 8 October. \nEntries must be delivered to the Gallery reception by 4pm on Sunday 8 October 2023. DESCRIPTION:Come along for a special event celebrating the opening of two new exhibitions at the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum; The Art of the Letter and The Great Haulage Feat 1905-06: The Removal of the Wakanui Mill. \nHear from Senior Curator Maryann Cowan about the incredible feat in moving the Wakanui Flour Mill across town almost 120 years ago\, as well as an even earlier massive move of the Convent of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Mission building. \nArchivist Connor Lysaght will discuss some of the handwritten letters and diaries preserved in the Ashburton Museum and Historical Society’s collection\, ranging from WWII soldiers’ letters to the everyday life of a teenage girl in Ashburton in 1902\, which will be read aloud by guest speakers.

SUMMARY:The Great Haulage Feat 1905-06: The Removal of the Wakanui Mill
DESCRIPTION:At nearly 16.5 metres tall and weighing 260 tonnes\, the huge wooden Wakanui Flour Mill was hauled 10.5km from its original site at Whakanui to the corner of Kermode and West Street over 18 working days. \nTwo traction engines pulled the building forward with the help of hardwood rollers\, 10cm in diameter\, positioned over tramway tracks laid along the road. All existing machinery remained inside the building during its move and early predictions were that the Mill would never stand the strain of the journey\, in itself a mighty feat… \nCome along to our new exhibition to discover the incredible innovation and technology used to make this massive move almost 120 years ago.

DESCRIPTION:Come along to this free\, social event at Ashburton Art Gallery & Museum where you can connect with new people\, art\, culture\, music and nature. This event is suitable for adults – ideal for those who haven’t yet ventured inside the Art Gallery\, as well as regular gallery visitors\, all are welcome! \nMeet others over drinks and nibbles and connect with someone new through sharing 1-1 about a special photo you’ve brought along (on your phone or perhaps a hard copy). Your photo might be of a place\, a person\, a memory – anything that is special to you\, that you’re happy to share. \nAfter some time mingling you will be given an introductory tour of the current exhibitions and then you’ll have a chance to enjoy them at your own pace\, chat some more or head home as you need. There’s a photography exhibition celebrating 100 years of Forest and Bird\, a stunning exhibition of carved Māori traditional instruments\, contemporary artworks & music\, and an exhibition featuring a collaborative contemporary jewelry project called Exquisite Corpse. So something for everyone! \nLimited places available so get your free tickets to this relaxed & friendly event before it sells out. Registrations are essential for catering purposes. Please note; drinks and nibbles will be provided free of charge by the organisers – Ashburton Art Gallery & Museum and Keep Learning Mid Canterbury\, but a donation/ koha is welcome toward catering costs. \nThe event will take place upstairs in the Learning Centre. DESCRIPTION:Before the advent of the internet\, communication between people separated by distance took place in the form of a letter. Paper\, pens\, ink and envelopes were basic requirements to form a link to family\, friends or colleagues\, sharing news of the best and worst kind. Anticipation built during days\, months or years of waiting\, not knowing what to expect until the letter finally arrived. \nThe Art of the Letter features a variety of written communications exhibited from the AM&HS collection along with tools\, equipment and furniture from across the years. Letter structure and purposes are explained alongside examples of the skilled penmanship\, now contested by the speed and convenience of modern-day living. \nCome and relive the magic and art of the written word.
