SUMMARY:Opening: Michael Greaves | Wesley John Fourie
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of two new exhibitions: Falling if not Flying by Michael Greaves\, and and with his kiss i became a braided river by Wesley John Fourie. \nFalling if not Flying builds on the last four years of Michael Greaves’ painting practice\, from the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. It explores the limits of extremes\, failing memory and interpretation. Using the parable of Icarus Greaves projects the unsureness of boundaries\, complex systems\, and faith. \nWesley John Fourie works across multiple media\, including ceramics\, video\, photography and textiles. One element of Fourie’s practice is the production of hand-knitted scale models of rivers. The central work of this exhibition is a total of 2100 metres of finger knitting that mimics at 1/100 scale the branches of Whakatere Ashburton river. Made over three years\, and existing in three-dimensions\, the work is an accumulation of time – in the labour involved in working the yarn – that reflects the life of a river at human scale. \nNau mai koutou katoa! All are welcome to join us at the opening of these two exhibitions on Saturday 14 December at 6pm. \nImage: Michael Greaves\, Indicative physical qualities of the phenomenal world (detail)\, 2023\, airbrush\, acrylic and oil on linen.

SUMMARY:Lost Luggage
DESCRIPTION:Lost luggage includes items of luggage or personal goods left behind or that have not arrived at the correct destination with the passenger. Whether travelling by rail\, bus\, ship or airline\, lost luggage usually and hopefully follows shortly after. \nLuggage with no claimant was (and in some cases\, still is) forwarded to the nearest city\, advertised\, and auctioned. Goods were sold as displayed – cases unopened\, boxes and bags sealed\, the contents could be trash or treasure. \nWhat do passengers lose? While Lost Luggage displays an assortment of items regularly lost by passengers\, some more unusual or unexpected items appear on the shelves. Can you spot them? Would you expect someone to lose such a thing?

SUMMARY:Artist Talk | Dr. Jane Venis
DESCRIPTION:At this special lunchtime artist talk\, Dr. Jane Venis will discuss her new exhibition Pāua Play\, introducing some history of the use and misuse of both paūa shell and the ukulele in Aotearoa and the wider Pacific. There will be an emphasis on exploring the history\, background\, and development of her contemporary instruments. \nShe will discuss how concepts of both Kitsch and Kiwiana have been influential in the development of the works. As part of the presentation Jane will introduce visitors to some of her earlier sculptural instruments that led to the development of the works in Pāua Play.  \n

SUMMARY:Bridging the chasm - 150 years of Ashburton District Railway
DESCRIPTION:Arriving in August 1874\, the Great Southern Railway opened Ashburton to the world. The station became the arrival and departure platform for thousands of people coming and going over the next 128 years until all passenger services ceased in 2002. It was\, in its heyday\, the central hub for our community. A railway trip was a day out at the beach or to the city. Soldiers left for war\, many never to return. Immigrants arrived for a new life\, a chance to start afresh\, and the all-important goods and mail were delivered via the railway. \nYou can explore over a century of stories of the Great Southern Railway in our new exhibition Bridging the Chasm. Discover how the chasm of the great Mid Canterbury plains was bridged by the railway\, now linking Christchurch to Timaru\, and how passengers used the service in their everyday lives from 1874 until 2002.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening | Esther Deans\, Jane Venis\, Jenna Packer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of three new exhibitions on Saturday 26 October at 6pm. \nEsther Deans’ thesis exhibition An Iconography of Doubt is an accumulation of ideas and imagery from four years of study towards her PhD through the Auckland University of Technology. This research was a personal investigation into her experiences and preoccupations\, including ideas about eschatology\, time\, literature\, art history\, memory\, and nature. In these works she draws on novels\, films\, and everyday structures to create an iconography that responds to personal and collective disaster. \nIn Pāua Play\, Jane Venis has hand-built a variety of instruments that incorporate the culturally potent material of pāua shell. Both the ukelele and pāua have been historically devalued within the Pacific – sold as cheap and kitschy tourist souvenirs\, which has exploited their status as taonga for their respective cultures. Here\, Jane combines the two to produce contemporary Kiwiana\, and along with other instruments\, forms an ensemble that evaluates where the line might lie between trinket and treasure. \nJenna Packer’s exhibition Toro looks back at over a decade of utilising the bull as a symbol\, one commonly associated with free market economics: the logos of financial companies\, the bull statue at Wall Street\, or the term ‘bull market’. Packer’s work incorporates this symbol as a literal structure; as monoliths built by speculative future societies\, or as totems encountered in an imagined past. \nNau mai koutou katoa – All are welcome at the opening of these exhibitions\, and light refreshments will be provided. \nImage: Jane Venis\, Pāua Trip\, 2024\, HD video still. SUMMARY:Clever Crustaceans Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us during the school holidays for a special Clever Crustaceans workshop with NIWA scientists! \nCrustaceans come in all shapes and sizes – from huge king crabs to tiny sand hoppers! Most of them live in the sea\, but some prefer to live in fresh water\, on land\, or even underground. \nLearn more about the wider gang\, from barnacles with superglue to slaters in the backyard in this workshop with two carcinologists (crustacean experts) from NIWA. \nDr Rachael Peart is a marine invertebrate systematist at NIWA where she studies small crustaceans\, particularly amphipods – like the sandhoppers you see at the beach. Over the last 25 years\, Rachael has described over 100 new amphipod species. \nDr Kareen Schnabel is a marine biologist at NIWA where she is an expert on New Zealand’s deep-sea crabs\, shrimps and lobster. Her favourite crustaceans are a group called squat lobsters. She studied squat lobsters during her PhD and has described over 30 new species of them. \nFrom colouring in to building your own crustacean\, there’s lots to see and do at the Clever Crustaceans school holiday workshop! \nImage:  Juvenile Lithodes aotearoa\, this specimen is only about 3 cm in diameter. SUMMARY:Mawhiti Tino Rawe | Clever Crustaceans
DESCRIPTION:Crabs\, shrimps\, lobsters\, barnacles\, slaters and other crustaceans are the stars of this new mini exhibition at Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum\, developed by NIWA and Te Papa. \nOpening on Saturday 28 September 2024\, Mawhiti Tino Rawe | Clever Crustaceans is a playful exploration of the bizarre and diverse world of five marine crustaceans. They can change their shape\, circle the globe\, and maybe even cure cancer – crustaceans are the unsung heroes of the sea. \nNIWA scientists Rachael Peart and Kareen Schnabel worked with Te Papa experts to deliver this mini exhibition that showcases the importance and special capabilities of the ‘insects of the sea’. \n“Crustaceans are arthropods\, which means they have segmented bodies and exoskeletons just like insects\, so I love describing them as the ‘insects of the sea’. They are captivating creatures. They have adapted to live in an incredible variety of habitats\, from beaches and shallows\, all the way down to the deepest ocean trenches\,” said Dr Schnabel. \nHands-on interactives and real specimens explore the fascinating world and smart survival tricks of these unusual creatures. Take a digital deep dive into a special web hub to discover their superpowers\, and explore the world of crustaceans with us at AAGM! \nImage: Up-close image of Phronima\, courtesy of Mike Stukel.

SUMMARY:Te Reo Māori Panel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this special event during Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori / Māori Language Week. \nWe will start with a historical overview\, looking at what has impacted the Māori language over the last 200 years – both in terms of its loss and its revitalisation. Then we will hear the stories of our 3 Māori panelists who will put a name and a face on that history and show how it has impacted their lives. \nPanelists will touch on the sensitive subjects of identity\, culture and loss. One panelist grew up only speaking Māori\, others have more painful stories of language loss in their whānau\, and can share their frustrations and feelings as they try to learn te reo Māori as adults. \nThis is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the place of te reo Māori in our nation’s past\, and its importance today in the lives of Māori in our community. We welcome teenagers and adults from all cultures to attend. There will be an opportunity to ask questions. \nTe Reo Māori teacher and learner Kate White (Pākehā) will present this historical overview and facilitate the panel discussion. \nThis is a free event\, but places are limited so please register by getting your free tickets today. \nOrganised by the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum and Keep Learning Mid Canterbury.

SUMMARY:Rachel Ratten | Artist Talk | Embroiderers' Guild Opening
DESCRIPTION:At the opening for The Magic of Needle and Thread\, the Embroiderers’ Guild exhibition\, Rachel Ratten will give a talk titled A journey from paint to thread. She will discuss her experiences with both quilting and freeform embroidery and her opposing approaches to these media. \nRachel graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from University of Canterbury in 2015. A figurative painter with a deep yearning for abstraction\, she was determined to crack it with paint\, but it just did not have the outcome that she wanted. Now Rachel produces textile-based “paintings” based on the formal elements of design.

SUMMARY:Art Lecture + Tour | Dr Mark Stocker
DESCRIPTION:At his talk How a Kiwi Joker can create an art collection on the smell of an oily rag\, art collector Mark Stocker will discuss the difference between the value and price of artworks\, as well as what to buy and what not to buy. He will then take us on a tour of some of the works in Seriously Valuable Art. Dr Mark Stocker is a semi-retired art historian who worked both as an academic (Canterbury and Otago) and as a curator (Te Papa). SUMMARY:Exhibition Openings and Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of two new exhibitions featuring an artist talk by Kim Ireland\, during which she will discuss her new works and provide insight into her practice. \nIn her new exhibition Mana Māna\, Kim Ireland utilises uku (clay) to produce a variety of forms that refer back to the natural shapes of the gourd in growth. This myriad of ceramics provide an analogy for whakapapa (genealogy) in the gourd as a container of knowledge passed down through generations\, and a representation of personhood when considering these objects as a whānau (family) group. \nIn Seriously Valuable Art\, the monetary value we place upon art is challenged. The exhibition asks viewers to guess which is the most expensive artwork on display. With one work being worth considerably more than the rest\, a question is posed: why are certain artworks more valuable than others? And can you tell the difference?

SUMMARY:Talk | Ian Soper: Ashburton Domain - The Why\, What and How
DESCRIPTION:Grandly named The Grange on Ashburton’s first map in 1864\, this fenced off area designated for recreation was largely indistinguishable from the untouched countryside around it. It wasn’t until 1877 when a newly appointed gardener began a systematic programme of planting that the area began to develop. Today known as the Ashburton Domain\, it has evolved into a versatile and much loved recreational area for our town. \nExplore objects\, archives\, photographs and tales associated with the Domain’s 160 year history in our exhibition Domain Tales: 160 years of Ashburton Domain\, and then find out more about how it is managed today at this special talk with ADC Open Spaces Manager Ian Soper. \nAs a career professional with over 48 years’ experience working in various sectors of the New Zealand Horticultural industry\, Ian has a passion for creating wonderful places and spaces for communities to use.

SUMMARY:Signs Past
DESCRIPTION:Signs impact our lives every day; they direct\, inform\, influence and advise us. Ideally\, the words\, symbols and graphics combine to convey a message in the form of a visually pleasing and easy to read sign. \nStyles\, methods and products used to create signage have changed dramatically over the past seventy years. A hand painted sign by a tradesman is now considered a work of art – a trade that flourished just forty years ago but is now largely overtaken by the age of digital signage. While illuminated signs still abound\, the process of manufacture has changed. \nOur Signs Past exhibition includes a selection of signage collected by the Ashburton Museum & Historical Society since the late 1950s\, although many pre-date this period. These signs and honours boards showcase a sign writer’s skill in conveying a visual message (or not\, in some cases). The signs vary in format but each preserve the story of a person\, place or time.

SUMMARY:Dianne Bardsley | The Land Girls | Historical Talk
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the closing of our exhibition Home Front Heroines\, join us for a special talk with Dianne Bardsley about land girls in Aotearoa. \nThroughout the 1990s Dianne Bardsley travelled across Aotearoa to trace and interview women who served in the Women’s Land Service during World War Two. Although she had found meagre official records in National Archives and the National Library\, with the help of retired wartime land girl Joan Butland\, she managed to find and interview 220 women in person and many more by written interview. Her book The Land Girls: In a Man’s World 1939-1946 was published by Otago University Press in 2000 and reprinted the same year. \nThe land girls\, numbering more than 4000\, cut across all demographic categories. They came from cities\, small towns\, and rural areas\, and from a range of occupations or university studies\, to live in a range of conditions. Former beauticians found themselves on isolated stations\, bathing in tin baths\, sleeping on makeshift beds in corrugated iron whare. Others luxuriated in the servant quarters of homesteads. Unused to animals and outdoor work\, they bought their own working dogs\, rode horses\, milked cows\, drove tractors\, and gutted and skinned sheep. \nWith a rural background\, Dianne Bardsley has been a secondary school teacher and university lecturer. She has a PhD in Applied Linguistics\, from which the book In the Paddock and On the Run describes the uniqueness and historical significance of New Zealand’s form of rural language.

SUMMARY:Through the Guardian Lens | Talk with Daryl Holden
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special talk with Daryl Holden\, the managing editor and co-owner of the Ashburton Guardian\, to celebrate our new exhibition Caught in the Moment: Guardian photographs of 1974. \nDaryl will explore the rich history and significant role of the Guardian newspaper over its 145 years in the district. This talk will focus on the impact the Guardian has made on the district\, why it is so much more than just a newspaper and why it’s important to the future democracy and vibrancy of Ashburton. \nDaryl has enjoyed a celebrated career in broadcasting and print media\, corporate communications and marketing for over 30 years. He’s edited more than a dozen papers\, has won multiple national journalism awards\, including being the recipient of a scholarship that saw him seconded to The Times\, of London. He has also worked in the agri-business field in senior commercial management and sales roles for national corporate organisations\, fertiliser company Ballance Agri-Nutrients and dairy herd animal testing company\, Livestock Improvement Corporation. He has been in charge at the Guardian for over three years and the district is an area he knows well. His wife is from Ashburton\, her parents still live in town as retired crop farmers and a brother and his family now run that farm. Outside of work\, sport has played a big part in Daryl’s life as a competitor\, coach and national board member\, and he loves his new “daughter’’\, a rehomed miniature schnauzer dog called Missy.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk | Legacy Issues
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our upcoming talk with artists from Legacy Issues on Sunday 09 June at 2pm. \nAt this talk\, artist and curator Hannah Watkinson will lead a panel discussion with the artists included in our new exhibition Legacy Issues. In addition\, featured artist Moana Lee will also give a live demonstration of the anthotype process\, a camera-less technique that involves laying an object on paper coated with a solution of silverbeet juice and vodka before exposing it to UV light to create prints. \nLegacy Issues brings together contemporary photographic artists Mitchell Bright\, Conor Clarke\, Ella Hickford\, Moana Lee\, Mike O’Kane\, Tim J. Veling\, and Hannah Watkinson\, and presents the diverse ways they have pictured our region. This selection of photographs aims to provide the audience with new perspectives and considerations of the land that we live on. The artists all approach the process of working with lens-based media in unique ways – through collaboration\, revisiting sites\, and reimagining the scenes they capture as physical objects and visual displays. \nDiscover the many different facets of photography and how each artist approaches their practice at this special talk and demonstration. This will also be a great opportunity to see the exhibition before it closes on June 14.

SUMMARY:Caught in the Moment: Guardian photographs of 1974
DESCRIPTION:Which moments in time did the Ashburton Guardian photographers capture around Hakatere Ashburton throughout 1974? A selection of photographs from our large collection of negatives will take visitors on a journey across various aspects of life in our district 50 years ago. Although some of these images were published in the daily paper\, most weren’t and won’t have been seen before. Many of the photographs were taken to support a newsworthy story\, while some are a story in themselves. \n  \nImage from the Ashburton Guardian negative collection\, 12 January 1974

SUMMARY:ANZAC day kōrero | 'Manpowering' women
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special ANZAC Day talk on Thursday 25 April at 2pm to celebrate our new exhibition Home Front Heroines. \nFrom January 1942 the New Zealand Government was able to direct women to work in essential industries. This saw many women working in jobs which prior to the war had been seen as male occupations. However the gender norms of the 1930s and 1940s had already been called into question in 1940 when the Women’s Land Corp was set up. Land girls often took on farm work which had previously been considered the domain of men. \nElizabeth Ward’s talk ‘Manpowering’ women and the challenge to gender norms during the Second World War will examine how the ‘manpowering’ of women upset gender norms and the issues this raised for New Zealand society. Elizabeth Ward is the manager of the Marlborough Museum. She has a PhD in History and specialises in the interwar period. \nImage | A Land Girl driving a Caterpillar Crawler. DESCRIPTION:Until recently\, the unsung heroes of Aotearoa New Zealand’s WWII home front efforts went largely unrecognised. \n‘Land girls’ of the Women’s Land Service\, an organisation formed under the Women’s War Service Auxiliary in 1942\, played a vital role in the country’s agricultural and food production industries while large numbers of men served in the armed forces overseas. \nExplore the history of the Women’s Land Service in Aotearoa in our new exhibition Home Front Heroines\, and discover the personal stories of noble\, hard-working Hakatere Ashburton women who served their country admirably despite the challenges and discrimination they faced.
