SUMMARY:Puaka Matariki: I Tō Mātou Wāhi\, In Our Place
DESCRIPTION:Puaka and Matariki hold great significance for Māori\, marking the beginning of the Māori New Year as these special whetū first appear in the midwinter sky. While the Matariki star cluster is celebrated by iwi across Aotearoa New Zealand\, Kāi Tahu in Te Waipounamu also observe Puaka – the brightest star in the Orion constellation. Puaka is more visible than Matariki here in Whakatere Ashburton and rises first\, while Matariki appears below and to the left of Puaka three days later. \nEach star has a role to play in guiding the community through the rhythms of life and death\, planting and harvesting\, summer and winter\, fishing and navigation. They mark the end of the harvest and the beginning of a new season: a time to remember our tūpuna and those who have passed during the year\, celebrate the present by gathering with whānau to share kai\, and prepare for the year ahead. \nThe handpainted pou in this exhibition were created by talented Ashburton College students in collaboration with our Educator Katie Graham. Each pou represents a star\, and together\, symbolise our region’s connection to Puaka and Matariki. The pou are unique\, much like the whetū themselves. \n  \nJoin us for the opening of this exhibition on Friday 30 May at 5.30pm. This will coincide with the opening of Caught in the Moment: Guardian photographs of 1975.

SUMMARY:Opening | Michael Armstrong\, Maire Le Lievre\, & Enmeshed
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of three new exhibitions! \nTimaru-based painter Michael Armstrong’s exhibition Paintings of Ruined Mythic Phantasies addresses themes that have preoccupied him throughout his career – social justice\, politics\, the environment and the misuse of power. \nIn Inventory\, Marie Le Lievre’s singular paintings require the ground as a starting point – paint is poured onto the canvas and manipulated by hand in an intuitive process that allows the medium to take its own course. With a background in psychology\, these works – painting\, drawing\, photography and collaborative film – become an explorative self-portrait of the artist. \nIn Enmeshed\, artists Julia Holderness\, Areez Katki\, Erica van Zon\, Ana Iti\, and Claudia Kogachi each reframe narratives born from archives\, films\, popular culture and personal histories. Engaging with feminist practices\, they critique the frameworks taken for granted as being ‘neutral’ by challenging prescribed structures of organising knowledge\, and in doing so\, show that how we organise and share knowledge is just as important as the knowledge itself. \nNau mai koutou katoa – all are welcome at this free event. \nImage: Areez Katki\, Shab o Havas (Nightswim)\, 2024\, cotton embroidery on remnant cloth. SUMMARY:“With the Girls Overseas” - the voices of World War II New Zealand nurses
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Anzac Day talk with Sarah Johnston\, where she will shed light on the voices of New Zealand nurses from the Second World War. \nSound historian Sarah Johnston is researching recordings made between 1940-1945 by New Zealand’s mobile broadcasting units\, which travelled overseas with our forces. The units reported on the fighting and recorded the voices of New Zealanders at war. These recordings were sent home to be played on a popular radio programme\, “With the Boys Overseas”\, which aired several times a week during the war. \nIn this Anzac Day talk Sarah will shed light on recordings the broadcasters made of New Zealand nurses. Courtesy of RNZ and Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision she will play some of these 80-year-old recordings and talk about the men and women who we hear in them. \nImage: Nurses of the 3rd Echelon\, New Zealand Army Nursing Service\, departing from Wellington during World War 2. SUMMARY:Opening and Artist Talk | Negativland : Erebus
DESCRIPTION:Negativland : Erebus by Will Hadwen is our new foyer wall commission. \nWill Hadwen is an interdisciplinary artist based in Wellington\, New Zealand. With a Master’s in Fine Arts from Massey University\, his practice explores light\, space\, trace\, and time through photography\, immersive installations\, and painting. Negativland : Erebus is the latest development in the ongoing Negativland series\, emerging from his voyage to Antarctica with Heritage Expeditions. The installation\, filling Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum’s foyer wall with large-scale canvases\, evokes the vast\, otherworldly essence of Antarctica. Inspired by landscapes seen at Mt Erebus\, the work reflects themes of exploration\, environmental conservation\, and the timeless\, altered perceptions experienced during the artist’s journey. \nJoin us for the opening and an artist talk by Will on Sunday 13 April at 2pm.

SUMMARY:Opening: Land\, Sea and Air | Sharing Histories
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of two new exhibitions! \nIn Land\, Sea and Air\, the stories of four Whakatere Ashburton locals who served during the Second World War will be shared. Explore the lives of a bicycle shop apprentice\, a private nurse\, a farm labourer\, and a hospital office clerk; these are some of our people who put themselves in danger during the Second World War\, to aid\, and to fight for the freedom of others\, each in their own way. \nSharing Histories is an annual exhibition of the previous year’s new treasures. The objects\, archives and photographs on display are a selection of items that were assessed\, accepted and preserved by our collections team in 2024. SUMMARY:Mike Dickison Talk: Why Wikipedia Matters\, Especially Now
DESCRIPTION:Wikipedia\, now over 20 years old\, has been described both as one of the greatest human achievements and the last good thing remaining on the Internet. How did a volunteer-written encyclopaedia\, widely ridiculed when it was first launched\, become such a crucial part of the world’s store of knowledge? \nAt this special talk with Dr. Mike Dickison\, we’ll explore how Wikipedia works\, what happens behind the scenes\, and what 250\,000 amateur Wikipedians do to keep it alive and accurate. We’ll also look at the threat posed by AI-generated text\, which has rapidly polluted the world’s information ecosystem but so far has yet to make inroads into Wikipedia\, and why the world’s richest man hates an online encyclopaedia so much. \nChristchurch-based Dr Mike Dickison\, a former museum curator and digital librarian\, is the grant-funded 2025 Aotearoa Wikipedian at Large focussed on Banks Peninsula. He has been working with Ashburton District Council to improve the coverage of the Ashburton area.

SUMMARY:Land\, Sea and Air
DESCRIPTION:On 4 September 1939\, the main headline of the day’s Ashburton Guardian newspaper was: “THE EMPIRE AT WAR”. This was the beginning of the Second World War for the people of Whakatere Ashburton. \nThe pattern of what followed the declaration of war was familiar to those who had lived through the First World War. Patriotic entertainments and fundraisers were held to raise money for the war effort\, and many people began enlisting for whatever land\, sea or air service they were able to. \nMore than 2\,000 local men saw active service overseas\, and a considerable number of Army nurses went with them. The “Home Front” was just as busy. During the first half of the war\, over 1\,700 locals had enlisted in the Home Guard\, and the Women’s Land Service also saw considerable interest. \nExplore the stories of a bicycle shop apprentice\, a private nurse\, a farm labourer\, and a hospital office clerk; these are some of our people who put themselves in danger during the Second World War\, to aid\, and to fight for the freedom of others\, each in their own way. \nJoin us for the formal opening of this exhibition on Sunday 23 March at 2pm. This will coincide with the opening of Sharing Histories 2025.

SUMMARY:Two O'Clock Tours | Michael Greaves
DESCRIPTION:An artist preoccupied with the philosophical questions surrounding painting and its purpose in the 21st century\, Michael Greaves tests how memories and ideas about the things of the world can be translated compellingly onto the painted surface. \nAt our first Two O’Clock Tour of 2025\, we will be exploring Greaves’ exhibition Falling if not Flying\, which is a continuation of the last four years of his practice – a period bound up with the COVID pandemic. \nCome along at 2pm on Sunday 26 January to explore the abstract and colourful world of Falling if not Flying with our Programmes Coordinator\, Bobbie. Discuss Greaves’ pictorial language and discover the context surrounding the works\, including their connection to the story of Icarus and Daedalus.

SUMMARY:Opening: Michael Greaves | Wesley John Fourie
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of two new exhibitions: Falling if not Flying by Michael Greaves\, and and with his kiss i became a braided river by Wesley John Fourie. \nFalling if not Flying builds on the last four years of Michael Greaves’ painting practice\, from the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. It explores the limits of extremes\, failing memory and interpretation. Using the parable of Icarus Greaves projects the unsureness of boundaries\, complex systems\, and faith. \nWesley John Fourie works across multiple media\, including ceramics\, video\, photography and textiles. One element of Fourie’s practice is the production of hand-knitted scale models of rivers. The central work of this exhibition is a total of 2100 metres of finger knitting that mimics at 1/100 scale the branches of Whakatere Ashburton river. Made over three years\, and existing in three-dimensions\, the work is an accumulation of time – in the labour involved in working the yarn – that reflects the life of a river at human scale. \nNau mai koutou katoa! All are welcome to join us at the opening of these two exhibitions on Saturday 14 December at 6pm. \nImage: Michael Greaves\, Indicative physical qualities of the phenomenal world (detail)\, 2023\, airbrush\, acrylic and oil on linen.

SUMMARY:Lost Luggage
DESCRIPTION:Lost luggage includes items of luggage or personal goods left behind or that have not arrived at the correct destination with the passenger. Whether travelling by rail\, bus\, ship or airline\, lost luggage usually and hopefully follows shortly after. \nLuggage with no claimant was (and in some cases\, still is) forwarded to the nearest city\, advertised\, and auctioned. Goods were sold as displayed – cases unopened\, boxes and bags sealed\, the contents could be trash or treasure. \nWhat do passengers lose? While Lost Luggage displays an assortment of items regularly lost by passengers\, some more unusual or unexpected items appear on the shelves. Can you spot them? Would you expect someone to lose such a thing?

SUMMARY:Bridging the chasm - 150 years of Ashburton District Railway
DESCRIPTION:Arriving in August 1874\, the Great Southern Railway opened Ashburton to the world. The station became the arrival and departure platform for thousands of people coming and going over the next 128 years until all passenger services ceased in 2002. It was\, in its heyday\, the central hub for our community. A railway trip was a day out at the beach or to the city. Soldiers left for war\, many never to return. Immigrants arrived for a new life\, a chance to start afresh\, and the all-important goods and mail were delivered via the railway. \nYou can explore over a century of stories of the Great Southern Railway in our new exhibition Bridging the Chasm. Discover how the chasm of the great Mid Canterbury plains was bridged by the railway\, now linking Christchurch to Timaru\, and how passengers used the service in their everyday lives from 1874 until 2002.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening | Esther Deans\, Jane Venis\, Jenna Packer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of three new exhibitions on Saturday 26 October at 6pm. \nEsther Deans’ thesis exhibition An Iconography of Doubt is an accumulation of ideas and imagery from four years of study towards her PhD through the Auckland University of Technology. This research was a personal investigation into her experiences and preoccupations\, including ideas about eschatology\, time\, literature\, art history\, memory\, and nature. In these works she draws on novels\, films\, and everyday structures to create an iconography that responds to personal and collective disaster. \nIn Pāua Play\, Jane Venis has hand-built a variety of instruments that incorporate the culturally potent material of pāua shell. Both the ukelele and pāua have been historically devalued within the Pacific – sold as cheap and kitschy tourist souvenirs\, which has exploited their status as taonga for their respective cultures. Here\, Jane combines the two to produce contemporary Kiwiana\, and along with other instruments\, forms an ensemble that evaluates where the line might lie between trinket and treasure. \nJenna Packer’s exhibition Toro looks back at over a decade of utilising the bull as a symbol\, one commonly associated with free market economics: the logos of financial companies\, the bull statue at Wall Street\, or the term ‘bull market’. Packer’s work incorporates this symbol as a literal structure; as monoliths built by speculative future societies\, or as totems encountered in an imagined past. \nNau mai koutou katoa – All are welcome at the opening of these exhibitions\, and light refreshments will be provided. \nImage: Jane Venis\, Pāua Trip\, 2024\, HD video still. SUMMARY:Clever Crustaceans Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us during the school holidays for a special Clever Crustaceans workshop with NIWA scientists! \nCrustaceans come in all shapes and sizes – from huge king crabs to tiny sand hoppers! Most of them live in the sea\, but some prefer to live in fresh water\, on land\, or even underground. \nLearn more about the wider gang\, from barnacles with superglue to slaters in the backyard in this workshop with two carcinologists (crustacean experts) from NIWA. \nDr Rachael Peart is a marine invertebrate systematist at NIWA where she studies small crustaceans\, particularly amphipods – like the sandhoppers you see at the beach. Over the last 25 years\, Rachael has described over 100 new amphipod species. \nDr Kareen Schnabel is a marine biologist at NIWA where she is an expert on New Zealand’s deep-sea crabs\, shrimps and lobster. Her favourite crustaceans are a group called squat lobsters. She studied squat lobsters during her PhD and has described over 30 new species of them. \nFrom colouring in to building your own crustacean\, there’s lots to see and do at the Clever Crustaceans school holiday workshop! \nImage:  Juvenile Lithodes aotearoa\, this specimen is only about 3 cm in diameter. SUMMARY:Mawhiti Tino Rawe | Clever Crustaceans
DESCRIPTION:Crabs\, shrimps\, lobsters\, barnacles\, slaters and other crustaceans are the stars of this new mini exhibition at Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum\, developed by NIWA and Te Papa. \nOpening on Saturday 28 September 2024\, Mawhiti Tino Rawe | Clever Crustaceans is a playful exploration of the bizarre and diverse world of five marine crustaceans. They can change their shape\, circle the globe\, and maybe even cure cancer – crustaceans are the unsung heroes of the sea. \nNIWA scientists Rachael Peart and Kareen Schnabel worked with Te Papa experts to deliver this mini exhibition that showcases the importance and special capabilities of the ‘insects of the sea’. \n“Crustaceans are arthropods\, which means they have segmented bodies and exoskeletons just like insects\, so I love describing them as the ‘insects of the sea’. They are captivating creatures. They have adapted to live in an incredible variety of habitats\, from beaches and shallows\, all the way down to the deepest ocean trenches\,” said Dr Schnabel. \nHands-on interactives and real specimens explore the fascinating world and smart survival tricks of these unusual creatures. Take a digital deep dive into a special web hub to discover their superpowers\, and explore the world of crustaceans with us at AAGM! \nImage: Up-close image of Phronima\, courtesy of Mike Stukel.

SUMMARY:Te Reo Māori Panel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this special event during Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori / Māori Language Week. \nWe will start with a historical overview\, looking at what has impacted the Māori language over the last 200 years – both in terms of its loss and its revitalisation. Then we will hear the stories of our 3 Māori panelists who will put a name and a face on that history and show how it has impacted their lives. \nPanelists will touch on the sensitive subjects of identity\, culture and loss. One panelist grew up only speaking Māori\, others have more painful stories of language loss in their whānau\, and can share their frustrations and feelings as they try to learn te reo Māori as adults. \nThis is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the place of te reo Māori in our nation’s past\, and its importance today in the lives of Māori in our community. We welcome teenagers and adults from all cultures to attend. There will be an opportunity to ask questions. \nTe Reo Māori teacher and learner Kate White (Pākehā) will present this historical overview and facilitate the panel discussion. \nThis is a free event\, but places are limited so please register by getting your free tickets today. \nOrganised by the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum and Keep Learning Mid Canterbury.
