SUMMARY:Heritage Talk | Brothers in Arms
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interesting ANZAC Day talk by Social History Curator Louisa Hormann and Archivist Connor Lysaght\, who will delve into a collection of letters written by two local First World War servicemen\, who were also brothers.  \nThe talk focuses on two farmers’ sons from the district\, George and Frederick Blee. Fred fought overseas in the Sinai-Palestine Campaign\, while George arrived in Europe at the very end of the war. Their story is primarily told through their letters\, written to each other and to their father John who farmed at Ashton\, Ashburton.  \nThe story of Fred and George Blee highlights the importance of familial connection\, at a time when an entire generation of young men put their lives on the line during the ‘war to end all wars.’

SUMMARY:Opening | Ian Scott\, Noel Meek\, Kara Burrowes & Charrette van Eekelen
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of three new exhibitions! \nPresenting previously unseen or rarely seen works\, Ian Scott: Painting New Zealand brings together a selection of Ian Scott’s work from the last three decades of his life. It highlights Scott’s interest in the story of New Zealand painting and painters\, and expands the perception of his practice beyond his most widely known and exhibited ‘lattices’ series. \nIn the cuckoo sings for me\, for the mountain\, Noel Meek asks if humans can find common ground with Coal and move from an exploitative relationship to a collaborative one. In a closely shot video work\, Coal is presented as an intricate landscape\, and ‘speaks’ through an imagined first-person monologue. \nIn Nocturne\, Kara Burrowes and Charrette van Eekelen explore the concept of night as a psychologically charged space where memory\, emotion\, uncertainty and yearning provide productive grounds for artmaking. \nAll are welcome to join us to celebrate the opening of these new exhibitions. \nImage: Ian Scott\, Rita Angus in Taradale\, 1987\, acrylic on canvas.
