SUMMARY:Summer Burty Challenge 2022/23
DESCRIPTION:School is almost out\, but there are plenty of activities to keep young people busy over the holidays\, including the annual Burty challenge involving the library\, art gallery and museum\, open spaces and EA Networks Centre. \nYoungsters are challenged to do two specific tasks at each of the locations\, have their challenge card stamped and then go into a draw to win one of three family passes to Ōpuke Thermal Pools. \nThere are 10 challenges in total\, and a full card will earn a free disc golf hire from EA Networks Centre. Challenges relate to specific activities at the facilities over the summer holidays – for example\, at the Ashburton Museum youngsters will be asked to complete an activity that is part of a visiting space discovery exhibit. \nThe annual challenge is a great way to keep youngsters occupied and the activities are free. It starts on Wednesday 14 December and runs until 29 January next year\, so there’s plenty of time to get through all 10 challenges. \nPick up a Burty Challenge card from our front desk to get started!

SUMMARY:Bobbie Barwell: Capturing People and Places
DESCRIPTION:Explore the life\, career and photographs of one of Ashburton’s earliest female photographers\, ‘Bobbie’ Barwell of Barwell Studios. \nA woman who was not confined by the social constructs of her time\, Bobbie’s photographs capture life in Hakatere Ashburton and Te Waipounamu in the 1930s and 40s\, with her passion for the outdoors shining through. Her photograph of Lake Pukaki appears to have been the inspiration for the engraving on the second series of the New Zealand five pound bank note\, released in 1940. This exhibition explores this story and more\, including photographic techniques\, equipment\, and practices in the era of Barwell Studios. \nLake Pukaki\, c.1930s\, Bobbie Barwell \nFive pound note\, 1940\, courtesy of Reserve Bank of NZ.

SUMMARY:Lecture: The Kelliher Paintings - a New Zealand Phenomenon
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to have Dr. Mark Stocker coming to Ashburton to share some of his knowledge and insight into our upcoming exhibition Rare and Unrivalled Beauty: Landscape Paintings from the Kelliher Art Trust Collection. Mark’s recently published article in Art New Zealand\, ’This is New Zealand: The Kelliher Collection Tours the Mainland’ (Autumn 2022)\, delves into the history and some of the controversy that still surrounds the Kelliher Collection\, and celebrates their ‘unrivalled beauty’. As Stocker says in his Art New Zealand article: “What immediately impresses is how admirably crafted many of the exhibits (whether ancient or modern) really are: they know their stuff\, what to represent and how to represent it.” \nCost: Free; light refreshments will be served. \nDr Mark Stocker is a semi-retired art historian who lives in Christchurch.  An academic at Canterbury and Otago for nearly 30 years\, his last job was Curator\, Historical International Art at Te Papa. Mark has 250 publications to his credit\, and his most recent book is When Britain Went Decimal: The Coinage of 1971 (Spink/ Royal Mint).  He also writes a monthly online column on historical pop music. \n  \nMark and Matty\, Cust 2020 \nTop image | Dick Frizzell\, Two Sheds and a Power Pole\, 2009. SUMMARY:Moon Walking
DESCRIPTION:About: \nThis brief activity is inspired by the Gallery’s current exhibition The moon and the pavement. Visitors are invited to consider their personal memories in relation to the different surfaces they walk upon\, and make a small artwork to represent such. \nDo you remember what your feet have walked upon today? They may have walked over cracked pavements\, jumped in muddy puddles\, stomped on crunchy gravel\, or ran through freshly cut grass. \nWhat do you think your feet saw? \nThis activity is designed to make you think about the different environments your body goes through without you fully noticing: \n1. To begin\, choose a template of a moon phase and cut it out. \n2. Then\, within your moon remember and draw what your feet have walked upon today. \nSignage and example pieces will be at the Museum reception\, as well as on the Gallery foyer tables. \nAges: All \nCost: Free; all welcome

SUMMARY:Art Competition for Ashburton District school students
DESCRIPTION:Art Competition for local schools: Entry deadline has now passed. Winning entries will be announced during Māori Language Week \nTe Wiki o Te Reo Māori \nTo celebrate Māori Language Week 2022\, we are making packs of Te Reo Māori flash cards to encourage the community to learn Mahika Kai; the range of natural resources throughout Te Wai Pounamu (The South Island). The kaupapa of this project is to empower and support the cultural revival of Ngāi Tahu (Kāi Tahu) use of Te Reo Māori. Each flash card will have a Māori and English word on one side\, and an illustration on the other side. Throughout Māori Language Week\, packs will be free and available from the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum for everyone in the local community. \nWe would like each flash card to be diverse and representative of the amazing talent in the Hakatere Ashburton District. So\, we are inviting school pupils to design illustrations for the  flashcards. Tamaraki and rangatiti in Years 1-13 can enter\, and we would be delighted to receive entries in a range of media and styles. Taking part in this art competition will enrich Māori culture\, develop awareness of the Ngāi Tahu dialect\, and inspire creativity in the classroom. \nIn addition to having your artwork printed and distributed around Hakatere Ashburton\, there will also be 10 mystery prizes to be won!
