Anticipation built during days\, months or years of waiting\, not knowing what to expect until the letter finally arrived. \nThe Art of the Letter features a variety of written communications exhibited from the AM&HS collection along with tools\, equipment and furniture from across the years. Letter structure and purposes are explained alongside examples of the skilled penmanship\, now contested by the speed and convenience of modern-day living. \nCome and relive the magic and art of the written word.

DESCRIPTION:Something big is coming to the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum this June…\nDespite being the largest squid on the planet\, the Colossal Squid is so rarely seen that only eight adult colossal squid have ever been scientifically reported. \nNow Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum\, in co-operation with Te Papa\, is set to reveal some of the fascinating science and wonderful secrets of one of New Zealand’s most significant natural history specimens. \nColossal Squid: Freaky Features! Te Ngū Tipua: Ngā Wāhanga Weriweri! centres around an interactive table displaying many different objects including the lens from an eye of the Colossal Squid\, part of a tentacle\, and a complete tiny squid; the miniature of its colossal relative. Touchable rotating models of a squid’s tentacle hook and the Colossal Squid’s beak are also on display. \nThe exhibition displays two documentaries which show life in the depths of the Southern Ocean\, and how the most complete Colossal Squid ever found ended up at Te Papa. \n  \nDeveloped and toured by Te Papa.

SUMMARY:Kōrero | Sharing the Burdens: Conscription in Canterbury during WWII
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a kōrero with David Littlewood\, Senior History Lecturer at Massey University\, about some of the lesser-known aspects of Canterbury’s WWII Home Front story. \nSharing the Burdens: Conscription in Canterbury during WWII \nDuring the initial stages of the Second World War\, the New Zealand government adopted sweeping powers to conscript men into the army. When conscription was subsequently extended into the industrial sphere and made applicable to women as well as men\, it became a web that entangled every aspect of wartime life. \nIn analysing how New Zealanders responded to conscription\, historians have focused on those few who raised conscientious objections. Yet most debate centred on how the balance should be struck between meeting the country’s military and food production commitments\, and on how the burdens conscription imposed should be spread among different groups. The ways in which such debates played out in Canterbury is the subject of this talk. \nDavid Littlewood is a Senior Lecturer in History at Massey University. His research focuses on New Zealand’s implementation of conscription during the world wars and on the intersections between conscription and citizenship. His first book was Military Service Tribunals and Boards in the Great War: Determining the Fate of Britain’s and New Zealand’s Conscripts (Routledge\, 2017). \nImage: Woman welding during WWII. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a kōrero with Angela Wanhalla\, Professor of History at the University of Otago\, about some of the lesser-known aspects of Canterbury’s WWII Home Front story. \nStories from the Canterbury Home Front during WWII \nThis illustrated talk will explore the women who married American servicemen\, and their fate\, through to Māori engagement in the patriotic war effort. What did the home front experience look like for Māori men and women in Canterbury and what impact did the war have on their lives? \nAngela Wanhalla specialises in Māori\, New Zealand\, and women’s history. She is currently involved in two projects: a book on the social\, legal and cultural legacies of the American occupation of New Zealand through the experiences of New Zealand’s GI War Brides. SUMMARY:ANZAC Day kōrero: Defending Waitaha Canterbury during WWII
DESCRIPTION:This ANZAC Day 25 April\, join us in commemorating the New Zealanders who have served our country by visiting our timely new exhibition Westerfield Camp – The Army Marches In and attending a special 2pm kōrero about Westerfield Military Camp in Hakatere Ashburton and the Awaroa/Godley Head coastal defence battery near Lyttleton Harbour. \nThese two defence sites in Waitaha Canterbury were constructed during the Second World War amidst a widespread fear of attack or invasion of Aotearoa itself\, first by the Germans and later by the Japanese. Our Senior Museum Curator Maryann Cowan will share the forgotten story of the Westerfield Military Camp\, built in 1942 across a 162 hectare landscape located 19km inland from Ashburton\, of which few physical remnants exist. The story of this fleeting camp has been pieced together through photographs\, archival records and first-hand accounts. \nGodley Head Heritage Trust Historian and Chair Peter Wilkins will also discuss one of the most intact and extensive WWII coastal defence batteries left in Aotearoa. In its heyday\, the Godley Head fort was a self-contained community staffed by over 400 men and women. Today\, three large gun emplacements and seven military buildings remain. The site has undergone significant repair in recent years and new interpretation has been developed to improve the visitor experience\, including WWII murals created by Ōtautahi street artist Wongi Wilson. \n

DESCRIPTION:Museum foyer\, 10am – 4pm daily \nTo coincide with our new exhibition Westerfield Camp – The Army Marches In\, which explores the Home Front in Hakatere Ashburton during the Second World War\, we are inviting tamariki and rangatahi to create hand-made postcards and write letters of love that will be delivered directly to Ukrainian refugee kids and mums. \nDuring WWI and WWII\, New Zealand children wrote letters and sent care packages to soldiers overseas in order to help keep up their morale. Through the similar act of writing a letter and creating a card for those who have been displaced by the conflict and violence in Ukraine\, we hope to show them that they are loved and provide some strength for their journey. \nCost: Free; drop in anytime \nAges: All welcome

DESCRIPTION:During periods of World War II\, New Zealanders lived in fear of attack or invasion\, first by the Germans and later by the Japanese. This exhibition explores the forgotten story of Westerfield Military Camp located 19km inland from Ashburton\, established in 1941 to provide a mobile response to a feared invasion. \nIn 1942\, the Army marched into Westerfield in a great flurry of activity\, changed the 162 hectare landscape\, and then disappeared as fast as they came. Witness the stories\, photographs and memories from the fleeting life of Westerfield Camp shared through this exhibition.

DESCRIPTION:While television sitcoms\, Instagram reels and Tik Tok videos are among the most popular forms of comedic entertainment today\, the humble printed cartoon has been providing New Zealanders with quick laughs for more than 160 years. \nAlthough the popularity of cartoons has waxed and waned over the years\, cartoonists have always been acute interpreters of public opinion\, conveying the public mood in a humorously exaggerated or satirical way. \nPolitical cartoons are often effective in capturing the essence of public personalities\, contemporary events and political issues. Whether they serve to stir the pot or encourage us to laugh at ourselves\, these cartoons can be important\, largely uncensored historical sources. \nHumour Me – The Funny Side of Town explores Hakatere Ashburton’s own rich cartooning heritage\, showcasing cartoons published in the Ashburton Guardian and various other short-lived newspapers/magazines about a variety of local issues. This exhibition also highlights the work of our district’s talented cartoonists\, including Sid Scales\, Frank H. Choat and Frank D. Choat.

SUMMARY:Summer Burty Challenge 2022/23
DESCRIPTION:School is almost out\, but there are plenty of activities to keep young people busy over the holidays\, including the annual Burty challenge involving the library\, art gallery and museum\, open spaces and EA Networks Centre. \nYoungsters are challenged to do two specific tasks at each of the locations\, have their challenge card stamped and then go into a draw to win one of three family passes to Ōpuke Thermal Pools. \nThere are 10 challenges in total\, and a full card will earn a free disc golf hire from EA Networks Centre. Challenges relate to specific activities at the facilities over the summer holidays – for example\, at the Ashburton Museum youngsters will be asked to complete an activity that is part of a visiting space discovery exhibit. \nThe annual challenge is a great way to keep youngsters occupied and the activities are free. It starts on Wednesday 14 December and runs until 29 January next year\, so there’s plenty of time to get through all 10 challenges. \nPick up a Burty Challenge card from our front desk to get started!

SUMMARY:Bobbie Barwell: Capturing People and Places
DESCRIPTION:Explore the life\, career and photographs of one of Ashburton’s earliest female photographers\, ‘Bobbie’ Barwell of Barwell Studios.  \nA woman who was not confined by the social constructs of her time\, Bobbie’s photographs capture life in Hakatere Ashburton and Te Waipounamu in the 1930s and 40s\, with her passion for the outdoors shining through. Her photograph of Lake Pukaki appears to have been the inspiration for the engraving on the second series of the New Zealand five pound bank note\, released in 1940.
