SUMMARY:From Tasman Glacier to Table Service
DESCRIPTION:For three Hakatere Ashburton men\, Wilf Holland\, Allen Kelly and Jack Pattle\, an adventure awaited them at Aoraki Mt Cook in March 1958. They were tasked with cutting three blocks of clean white ice from a glacier and preparing them for shipping to New York. \nFrom Tasman Glacier to Table Service follows the journey of the ice from Aotearoa New Zealand to New York City\, where it was intended to be used to cool drinks at a ‘New Zealand Night’ dinner hosted by the Overseas Press Club of America. \nCome and experience an epic journey taken by van\, plane\, boat and rail\, through which a fragile piece of Aotearoa travels further than was ever thought possible.

SUMMARY:Suffrage in Stitches
DESCRIPTION:This year\, we celebrated the 130th anniversary of women’s suffrage in Aotearoa New Zealand. When the Electoral Act 1893 was passed\, this landmark legislation saw New Zealand become the first self-governing country in the world to give all women the right to vote. \nCurated by Wellington Museum\, Suffrage in Stitches features a 300-metre long textile work made up of 546 individual panels\, representing the length of the main Suffrage Petition presented to Parliament in 1893 (274 metres long with a page count of 546). \n\n\nIn 2018\, in partnership with St Vincent de Paul and Vinnies Re Sew initiative\, Wellington Museum held workshops that asked participants to use a needle and thread to create something inspired by women. The resulting 546 textile panels came together to create Suffrage in Stitches\, honouring whakapapa\, history\, and the power of New Zealanders. \nAfter touring to multiple venues across Aotearoa\, this exhibition will be shown at Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum from December 02\, 2023\, until February 18\, 2024. \n\nMain Image: Photo courtesy of Amber-Jayne Bain

SUMMARY:Art Competition for Ashburton District school students
DESCRIPTION:Art Competition for local schools: Entry deadline has now passed. Winning entries will be announced during Māori Language Week \nTe Wiki o Te Reo Māori \nTo celebrate Māori Language Week 2022\, we are making packs of Te Reo Māori flash cards to encourage the community to learn Mahika Kai; the range of natural resources throughout Te Wai Pounamu (The South Island). The kaupapa of this project is to empower and support the cultural revival of Ngāi Tahu (Kāi Tahu) use of Te Reo Māori. Each flash card will have a Māori and English word on one side\, and an illustration on the other side. Throughout Māori Language Week\, packs will be free and available from the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum for everyone in the local community. \nWe would like each flash card to be diverse and representative of the amazing talent in the Hakatere Ashburton District. So\, we are inviting school pupils to design illustrations for the  flashcards. Tamaraki and rangatiti in Years 1-13 can enter\, and we would be delighted to receive entries in a range of media and styles. Taking part in this art competition will enrich Māori culture\, develop awareness of the Ngāi Tahu dialect\, and inspire creativity in the classroom. \nIn addition to having your artwork printed and distributed around Hakatere Ashburton\, there will also be 10 mystery prizes to be won!
