SUMMARY:Opening: Iain Cheesman | Saskia Bunce-Rath | Hakatere Ceramics
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of three new exhibitions: Iain Cheesman’s Nurture Nature\, Saskia Bunce-Rath’s eating stars together at dusk\, and Hakatere Ceramics’ From the Earth.  \nIain Cheesman’s new exhibition Nurture Nature celebrates the act of slowing down and looking. Within the gallery space\, painting\, sculpture\, embroidery\, taxidermy and poetry sit together\, creating a landscape for the viewer to navigate. Cheesman introduces birds as the focal point of his landscape\, and as a bird watcher himself\, hopes that the viewer will take on this role of nature observer within the exhibition. \nIn Saskia Bunce-Rath’s solo exhibition eating stars together at dusk\, thread is deployed\, as she says\, in ‘a painterly way’ to create images that evoke myth\, fantasy\, wonder and dream. By infusing the recognisable with the remarkable in brightly-coloured tapestries of various scales\, and with poetic titles that only add to the mystery\, she creates cosmologies for the strange creatures that inhabit her jewel-like works. \nFrom the Earth is an exhibition by the Hakatere Ceramics Group. Started in 2015\, the Hakatere Ceramics and Pottery Group of Ashburton is local group of ceramic enthusiasts who aim to create a welcoming\, educational and encouraging environment for those who want to learn more about the art of clay. This year there will also be a display from guest artist Hannah Kidd. \nJoin us on October 18 at 6pm to celebrate the opening of these three exhibitions. All are welcome at this free event and light refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:The Great Haulage Feat 1905-06: The Removal of the Wakanui Mill
DESCRIPTION:At nearly 16.5 metres tall and weighing 260 tonnes\, the huge wooden Wakanui Flour Mill was hauled 10.5km from its original site at Whakanui to the corner of Kermode and West Street over 18 working days. \nTwo traction engines pulled the building forward with the help of hardwood rollers\, 10cm in diameter\, positioned over tramway tracks laid along the road. All existing machinery remained inside the building during its move and early predictions were that the Mill would never stand the strain of the journey\, in itself a mighty feat… \nCome along to our new exhibition to discover the incredible innovation and technology used to make this massive move almost 120 years ago.

SUMMARY:The Art of the Letter
DESCRIPTION:Before the advent of the internet\, communication between people separated by distance took place in the form of a letter. Paper\, pens\, ink and envelopes were basic requirements to form a link to family\, friends or colleagues\, sharing news of the best and worst kind. Anticipation built during days\, months or years of waiting\, not knowing what to expect until the letter finally arrived. \nThe Art of the Letter features a variety of written communications exhibited from the AM&HS collection along with tools\, equipment and furniture from across the years. Letter structure and purposes are explained alongside examples of the skilled penmanship\, now contested by the speed and convenience of modern-day living. \nCome and relive the magic and art of the written word.

SUMMARY:Colossal Squid: Freaky Features! | Te Ngū Tipua: Ngā Wāhanga Weriweri!
DESCRIPTION:Something big is coming to the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum this June…\nDespite being the largest squid on the planet\, the Colossal Squid is so rarely seen that only eight adult colossal squid have ever been scientifically reported. \nNow Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum\, in co-operation with Te Papa\, is set to reveal some of the fascinating science and wonderful secrets of one of New Zealand’s most significant natural history specimens. \nColossal Squid: Freaky Features! Te Ngū Tipua: Ngā Wāhanga Weriweri! centres around an interactive table displaying many different objects including the lens from an eye of the Colossal Squid\, part of a tentacle\, and a complete tiny squid; the miniature of its colossal relative. Touchable rotating models of a squid’s tentacle hook and the Colossal Squid’s beak are also on display. \nThe exhibition displays two documentaries which show life in the depths of the Southern Ocean\, and how the most complete Colossal Squid ever found ended up at Te Papa. \n  \nDeveloped and toured by Te Papa.

SUMMARY:Puaka: A Star on the Rise
DESCRIPTION:While Matariki is celebrated by many iwi across Aotearoa to mark the Māori New Year\, Kāi Tahu in Te Waipounamu also celebrate Puaka/Puanga. Puaka is the brightest star in the Orion constellation and is more visible than Matariki here in Hakatere Ashburton. \nThis exhibition provides a tranquil space for the community to reflect on the year that has been\, celebrate the present and prepare for what lies ahead. It will also showcase the work of creative tamariki and rangatahi in our district who have crafted intricately designed whetū (stars) and manu tukutuku (kites)\, which are often flown during Māori New Year celebrations. \nPlease join us for the blessing of this exhibition at 6pm on Friday 23 June. This event will coincide with opening of Colossal Squid: Freaky Features! | Te Ngū Tipua: Ngā Wāhanga Weriweri!\, an exhibition developed and toured by Te Papa.

SUMMARY:Westerfield Camp - The Army Marches In
DESCRIPTION:During periods of World War II\, New Zealanders lived in fear of attack or invasion\, first by the Germans and later by the Japanese. This exhibition explores the forgotten story of Westerfield Military Camp located 19km inland from Ashburton\, established in 1941 to provide a mobile response to a feared invasion. \nIn 1942\, the Army marched into Westerfield in a great flurry of activity\, changed the 162 hectare landscape\, and then disappeared as fast as they came. Witness the stories\, photographs and memories from the fleeting life of Westerfield Camp shared through this exhibition.

SUMMARY:Humour Me - The Funny Side of Town
DESCRIPTION:While television sitcoms\, Instagram reels and Tik Tok videos are among the most popular forms of comedic entertainment today\, the humble printed cartoon has been providing New Zealanders with quick laughs for more than 160 years. \nAlthough the popularity of cartoons has waxed and waned over the years\, cartoonists have always been acute interpreters of public opinion\, conveying the public mood in a humorously exaggerated or satirical way. \nPolitical cartoons are often effective in capturing the essence of public personalities\, contemporary events and political issues. Whether they serve to stir the pot or encourage us to laugh at ourselves\, these cartoons can be important\, largely uncensored historical sources. \nHumour Me – The Funny Side of Town explores Hakatere Ashburton’s own rich cartooning heritage\, showcasing cartoons published in the Ashburton Guardian and various other short-lived newspapers/magazines about a variety of local issues. This exhibition also highlights the work of our district’s talented cartoonists\, including Sid Scales\, Frank H. Choat and Frank D. Choat.

SUMMARY:Bobbie Barwell: Capturing People and Places
DESCRIPTION:Explore the life\, career and photographs of one of Ashburton’s earliest female photographers\, ‘Bobbie’ Barwell of Barwell Studios. \nA woman who was not confined by the social constructs of her time\, Bobbie’s photographs capture life in Hakatere Ashburton and Te Waipounamu in the 1930s and 40s\, with her passion for the outdoors shining through. Her photograph of Lake Pukaki appears to have been the inspiration for the engraving on the second series of the New Zealand five pound bank note\, released in 1940. This exhibition explores this story and more\, including photographic techniques\, equipment\, and practices in the era of Barwell Studios. \nLake Pukaki\, c.1930s\, Bobbie Barwell \nFive pound note\, 1940\, courtesy of Reserve Bank of NZ.

In collaboration with local photographer Emmily Harmer\, 20 family groups were photographed in their cultural garments and recounted their heritage story for this book. This snapshot of our District’s diverse ethnicities is replicated in our Hakatere Home & Heritage exhibition\, with an example of cultural dress displayed alongside beautiful individual photographs.
