SUMMARY:Caught in the Moment: Guardian photographs of 1976
DESCRIPTION:What moments in time did the Ashburton Guardian photographers capture around Whakatere Ashburton throughout 1976? This selection of photographs from our large collection of Guardian negatives will take you on a journey across various aspects of life in our district 50 years ago. \nAlthough some of these images were published in the daily newspaper\, most weren’t and won’t have been seen before. Many of the photographs were taken to support a newsworthy story\, while some are a whole story in themselves. \nJoin us for the opening of this exhibition on Friday\, 29 May at 6pm. This will coincide with the opening of Matariki herenga waka: A mooring place for all canoes.  \nImage from the Ashburton Guardian negative collection\, 1 April 1976.

DESCRIPTION:Each year items are donated to the Ashburton Museum and Historical Society collection. Through this process\, Rokowhiria Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum acquires new treasures to be cared for\, researched and displayed. \nSharing Histories presents a selection of objects\, archives and photographs newly acquired in 2025-2026. These were assessed\, accepted and preserved by our collections team. \nAlthough these items were collected for their significance to the Whakatere Ashburton district\, each has its own unique history to share. \nImage: Lion hand-carved by Bobbie Barwell dated 14 November 1925.
