SUMMARY:Dearly Beloved | 100 Years of the Wedding Dress
DESCRIPTION:Weddings are a traditional rite of passage; ceremony overlaid with religious significance and cultural expectations. Befitting the occasion\, bridal clothing may be ceremonially symbolic in colour\, textile\, or style\, but also follows the fashion of the day and evolves\, as traditions do\, over time. \nThis exhibition features a selection of bridal wear from our collection\, representing wedding fashion from the late 1800s and through the twentieth century. Discover the beauty and craftswomanship of home- or dressmaker-made garments\, embellished by hand. With a focus on the wearers of these dresses and Aotearoa wedding traditions\, we see how the wedding dress reflects changes in fashion – both in aesthetic style and our social customs. \nDisplayed across two exhibition spaces\, Dearly Beloved also presents the Ashburton Bride of the Year 1970 winner’s gown – an unusual\, though at the time\, very contemporary wedding dress – alongside related objects and photographs from the Gordon Binsted negatives collection. \n  \nImage: Photograph\, wedding of Elisabeth and Antony Quaid on 14 November 1992. SUMMARY:Opening | Kathy Reilly\, Inge and Marc Doesburg\, Print Council Aotearoa
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of our three new summer exhibitions! \nKathy Reilly’s solo exhibition Peregination: A Sub Antarctic Odyssey explores her Subantarctic research expedition through a variety of printmaking methods. Featured works include detailed etchings and cyanotypes of endemic plant species\, and studies of the Toroa Royal Southern Albatross in prints and a video work. \nDuologue is a collaborative exhibition by Ōtepoti Dunedin-based artists Inge and Marc Doesburg. Trained as a printmaker\, Inge’s works explore the landscapes and sensations of her adopted home Aotearoa through print\, painting\, photography and drawing. Marc’s photography looks for the formal arrangements within a scene by following a line\, or capturing the incidental compositions of architectural elements; often exploring the overlooked spaces from daily life. \nContemporary Printmaking of Aotearoa: A Kōrero of Thoughts and Ideas is an exhibition of works by members of the Print Council Aotearoa New Zealand. By folding in new technologies\, experimenting with different surfaces\, or cross-pollinating with other artistic disciplines\, the works in this exhibition continue to explore the breadth of opportunity latent in twenty-first century printmaking. \nThis event will coincide with the opening of Dearly Beloved: 100 Years of the Wedding Dress.  \nNau mai koutou katoa – all are welcome at this free event! \nOpening | Saturday 13 December\, 6pm  \nImage: Kathy Reilly\, Wayfinding\, 2024\, hybrid printmaking

SUMMARY:Pop-up Exhibition | Ng King Bros. Chinese Market Garden Settlement
DESCRIPTION:This Labour Weekend\, Rokowhiria presents a pop-up display of “A New Era: Ng King Bros. Chinese Market Garden Settlement”. This small exhibit features archaeological items from the original site\, video interviews\, and related objects from our collection – on display in our Learning Centre from 25-27 October 2025. \nNg King Brothers Gardens was a commercial market garden\, one of the largest in Aotearoa New Zealand\, operative from 1921 until 1964. The site is a rare remaining example of a Chinese market garden settlement in Aotearoa\, with the original buildings mostly intact and one of the only remaining Chinese pig pit ovens in Australasia. \nOur original 2024 exhibition celebrated the restoration and re-opening of the local settlement in Whakatere Ashburton\, opened for public access on 25 February 2024 as a community heritage park. Come and explore the archaeological\, historical\, and cultural importance of the Ng King Brothers Gardens.

SUMMARY:Operation Grapple: We Were There
DESCRIPTION:In 1957/58 the British Government conducted a series of nuclear weapons tests at Christmas Island and Malden Island in the mid-Pacific Ocean. This series of detonations was given the codename “Operation Grapple”. \nOperation Grapple consisted of 9 nuclear detonations between May 1957 and September 1958. The biggest of the detonations\, Grapple Y\, was equal to 200 Hiroshima bombs. \nTwo New Zealand frigates attended the series of detonations: HMNZS Pukaki and HMNZS Rotoiti. Over the course of these tests\, a total of 551 New Zealand naval personnel manned these ships. Their duties consisted of witnessing the detonation of the nuclear devices and collecting weather data as close as 37 kilometres to Ground Zero. \nIn Operation Grapple: We Were There\, Denise Baynham presents portraits of 19 New Zealand nuclear test veterans. Photographed in their own homes so you can see where and who they are now\, the accompanying stories about Operation Grapple are told in the veterans’ own words. \nImage: Portrait of Tere Tahi\, photographed by Denise Baynham.

SUMMARY:Caught in the Moment: Guardian photographs of 1975
DESCRIPTION:What moments in time did the Ashburton Guardian photographers capture around Whakatere Ashburton throughout 1975? This selection of photographs from our large collection of Guardian negatives will take you on a journey across various aspects of life in our district 50 years ago. \nAlthough some of these images were published in the daily newspaper\, most weren’t and won’t have been seen before. Many of the photographs were taken to support a newsworthy story\, while some are a whole story in themselves. \nJoin us for the opening of this exhibition on Friday\, 30 May at 5.30 pm. This will coincide with the opening of Puaka Matariki: In Our Place. \nImage from the Ashburton Guardian negative collection\, 04 April 1975

SUMMARY:Puaka Matariki: I Tō Mātou Wāhi\, In Our Place
DESCRIPTION:Puaka and Matariki hold great significance for Māori\, marking the beginning of the Māori New Year as these special whetū first appear in the midwinter sky. While the Matariki star cluster is celebrated by iwi across Aotearoa New Zealand\, Kāi Tahu in Te Waipounamu also observe Puaka – the brightest star in the Orion constellation. Puaka is more visible than Matariki here in Whakatere Ashburton and rises first\, while Matariki appears below and to the left of Puaka three days later. \nEach star has a role to play in guiding the community through the rhythms of life and death\, planting and harvesting\, summer and winter\, fishing and navigation. They mark the end of the harvest and the beginning of a new season: a time to remember our tūpuna and those who have passed during the year\, celebrate the present by gathering with whānau to share kai\, and prepare for the year ahead. \nThe handpainted pou in this exhibition were created by talented Ashburton College students in collaboration with our Educator Katie Graham. Each pou represents a star\, and together\, symbolise our region’s connection to Puaka and Matariki. The pou are unique\, much like the whetū themselves. \n  \nJoin us for the opening of this exhibition on Friday 30 May at 5.30pm. This will coincide with the opening of Caught in the Moment: Guardian photographs of 1975.

SUMMARY:Sharing Histories | Gifts of 2024
DESCRIPTION:Each year new treasures are collected by museums all around the world and ours is no different. \nIn the past year\, a variety of items have been donated to the Ashburton Museum and Historical Society’s collection\, which is housed and cared for by the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum. \nThe treasured objects\, archives and photographs on display are a selection of items that were assessed\, accepted and preserved by our collections team in 2024. \nAlthough these items have all been collected for their significance to the Whakatere Ashburton region\, each item has its own unique history to share. \nSharing Histories is an annual exhibition of the previous year’s new treasures. The selection for this year’s exhibition includes work apparel\, a treasured family lantern\, business records\, a lodge memento\, photographs of local people enjoying life and a 19th century swinging kettle. \nAll items have been collected for the purpose of education\, research\, and to preserve and share our local history and stories. \n  \nJoin us for the formal opening of this exhibition on Sunday 23 March at 2pm. This will coincide with the opening of Land\, Sea and Air. \n\nImage: Electric Chinese lantern\, made of carved wood and painted glass panes depicting motifs of dragons\, birds\, flowers\, plants\, and butterflies\, 1950-1980. SUMMARY:Land\, Sea and Air
DESCRIPTION:On 4 September 1939\, the main headline of the day’s Ashburton Guardian newspaper was: “THE EMPIRE AT WAR”. This was the beginning of the Second World War for the people of Whakatere Ashburton. \nThe pattern of what followed the declaration of war was familiar to those who had lived through the First World War. Patriotic entertainments and fundraisers were held to raise money for the war effort\, and many people began enlisting for whatever land\, sea or air service they were able to. \nMore than 2\,000 local men saw active service overseas\, and a considerable number of Army nurses went with them. The “Home Front” was just as busy. During the first half of the war\, over 1\,700 locals had enlisted in the Home Guard\, and the Women’s Land Service also saw considerable interest. \nExplore the stories of a bicycle shop apprentice\, a private nurse\, a farm labourer\, and a hospital office clerk; these are some of our people who put themselves in danger during the Second World War\, to aid\, and to fight for the freedom of others\, each in their own way. \nJoin us for the formal opening of this exhibition on Sunday 23 March at 2pm. This will coincide with the opening of Sharing Histories 2025.

SUMMARY:Lost Luggage
DESCRIPTION:Lost luggage includes items of luggage or personal goods left behind or that have not arrived at the correct destination with the passenger. Whether travelling by rail\, bus\, ship or airline\, lost luggage usually and hopefully follows shortly after. \nLuggage with no claimant was (and in some cases\, still is) forwarded to the nearest city\, advertised\, and auctioned. Goods were sold as displayed – cases unopened\, boxes and bags sealed\, the contents could be trash or treasure. \nWhat do passengers lose? While Lost Luggage displays an assortment of items regularly lost by passengers\, some more unusual or unexpected items appear on the shelves. Can you spot them? Would you expect someone to lose such a thing?

SUMMARY:Bridging the chasm - 150 years of Ashburton District Railway
DESCRIPTION:Arriving in August 1874\, the Great Southern Railway opened Ashburton to the world. The station became the arrival and departure platform for thousands of people coming and going over the next 128 years until all passenger services ceased in 2002. It was\, in its heyday\, the central hub for our community. A railway trip was a day out at the beach or to the city. Soldiers left for war\, many never to return. Immigrants arrived for a new life\, a chance to start afresh\, and the all-important goods and mail were delivered via the railway. \nYou can explore over a century of stories of the Great Southern Railway in our new exhibition Bridging the Chasm. Discover how the chasm of the great Mid Canterbury plains was bridged by the railway\, now linking Christchurch to Timaru\, and how passengers used the service in their everyday lives from 1874 until 2002.

SUMMARY:Mawhiti Tino Rawe | Clever Crustaceans
DESCRIPTION:Crabs\, shrimps\, lobsters\, barnacles\, slaters and other crustaceans are the stars of this new mini exhibition at Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum\, developed by NIWA and Te Papa. \nOpening on Saturday 28 September 2024\, Mawhiti Tino Rawe | Clever Crustaceans is a playful exploration of the bizarre and diverse world of five marine crustaceans. They can change their shape\, circle the globe\, and maybe even cure cancer – crustaceans are the unsung heroes of the sea. \nNIWA scientists Rachael Peart and Kareen Schnabel worked with Te Papa experts to deliver this mini exhibition that showcases the importance and special capabilities of the ‘insects of the sea’. \n“Crustaceans are arthropods\, which means they have segmented bodies and exoskeletons just like insects\, so I love describing them as the ‘insects of the sea’. They are captivating creatures. They have adapted to live in an incredible variety of habitats\, from beaches and shallows\, all the way down to the deepest ocean trenches\,” said Dr Schnabel. \nHands-on interactives and real specimens explore the fascinating world and smart survival tricks of these unusual creatures. Take a digital deep dive into a special web hub to discover their superpowers\, and explore the world of crustaceans with us at AAGM! \nImage: Up-close image of Phronima\, courtesy of Mike Stukel.

SUMMARY:Domain Tales | 160 years of Ashburton Domain
DESCRIPTION:Grandly named The Grange on Ashburton’s first map in 1864\, this fenced-off area designated for recreation was largely indistinguishable from the untouched countryside around it. \nIt wasn’t until 1877 when a newly appointed gardener began a systematic programme of planting that the area began to develop. Today known as the Ashburton Domain\, it has evolved into a versatile and much-loved recreational area for our town. \nIn this exhibition\, objects\, archives and photographs will explore some of the tales associated with the Domain’s 160 year history. \n  \nImage: Hand-coloured postcard\, Ashburton Domain swimming baths c.1911. SUMMARY:Signs Past
DESCRIPTION:Signs impact our lives every day; they direct\, inform\, influence and advise us. Ideally\, the words\, symbols and graphics combine to convey a message in the form of a visually pleasing and easy to read sign. \nStyles\, methods and products used to create signage have changed dramatically over the past seventy years. A hand painted sign by a tradesman is now considered a work of art – a trade that flourished just forty years ago but is now largely overtaken by the age of digital signage. While illuminated signs still abound\, the process of manufacture has changed. \nOur Signs Past exhibition includes a selection of signage collected by the Ashburton Museum & Historical Society since the late 1950s\, although many pre-date this period. These signs and honours boards showcase a sign writer’s skill in conveying a visual message (or not\, in some cases). The signs vary in format but each preserve the story of a person\, place or time.

SUMMARY:Caught in the Moment: Guardian photographs of 1974
DESCRIPTION:Which moments in time did the Ashburton Guardian photographers capture around Hakatere Ashburton throughout 1974? A selection of photographs from our large collection of negatives will take visitors on a journey across various aspects of life in our district 50 years ago. Although some of these images were published in the daily paper\, most weren’t and won’t have been seen before. Many of the photographs were taken to support a newsworthy story\, while some are a story in themselves. \n  \nImage from the Ashburton Guardian negative collection\, 12 January 1974

SUMMARY:From Tasman Glacier to Table Service
DESCRIPTION:For three Hakatere Ashburton men\, Wilf Holland\, Allen Kelly and Jack Pattle\, an adventure awaited them at Aoraki Mt Cook in March 1958. They were tasked with cutting three blocks of clean white ice from a glacier and preparing them for shipping to New York. \nFrom Tasman Glacier to Table Service follows the journey of the ice from Aotearoa New Zealand to New York City\, where it was intended to be used to cool drinks at a ‘New Zealand Night’ dinner hosted by the Overseas Press Club of America. \nCome and experience an epic journey taken by van\, plane\, boat and rail\, through which a fragile piece of Aotearoa travels further than was ever thought possible.

SUMMARY:Suffrage in Stitches
DESCRIPTION:This year\, we celebrated the 130th anniversary of women’s suffrage in Aotearoa New Zealand. When the Electoral Act 1893 was passed\, this landmark legislation saw New Zealand become the first self-governing country in the world to give all women the right to vote. \nCurated by Wellington Museum\, Suffrage in Stitches features a 300-metre long textile work made up of 546 individual panels\, representing the length of the main Suffrage Petition presented to Parliament in 1893 (274 metres long with a page count of 546). \n\n\nIn 2018\, in partnership with St Vincent de Paul and Vinnies Re Sew initiative\, Wellington Museum held workshops that asked participants to use a needle and thread to create something inspired by women. The resulting 546 textile panels came together to create Suffrage in Stitches\, honouring whakapapa\, history\, and the power of New Zealanders. \nAfter touring to multiple venues across Aotearoa\, this exhibition will be shown at Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum from December 02\, 2023\, until February 18\, 2024. \n\nMain Image: Photo courtesy of Amber-Jayne Bain

SUMMARY:Opening: Iain Cheesman | Saskia Bunce-Rath | Hakatere Ceramics
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of three new exhibitions: Iain Cheesman’s Nurture Nature\, Saskia Bunce-Rath’s eating stars together at dusk\, and Hakatere Ceramics’ From the Earth.  \nIain Cheesman’s new exhibition Nurture Nature celebrates the act of slowing down and looking. Within the gallery space\, painting\, sculpture\, embroidery\, taxidermy and poetry sit together\, creating a landscape for the viewer to navigate. Cheesman introduces birds as the focal point of his landscape\, and as a bird watcher himself\, hopes that the viewer will take on this role of nature observer within the exhibition. \nIn Saskia Bunce-Rath’s solo exhibition eating stars together at dusk\, thread is deployed\, as she says\, in ‘a painterly way’ to create images that evoke myth\, fantasy\, wonder and dream. By infusing the recognisable with the remarkable in brightly-coloured tapestries of various scales\, and with poetic titles that only add to the mystery\, she creates cosmologies for the strange creatures that inhabit her jewel-like works. \nFrom the Earth is an exhibition by the Hakatere Ceramics Group. Started in 2015\, the Hakatere Ceramics and Pottery Group of Ashburton is local group of ceramic enthusiasts who aim to create a welcoming\, educational and encouraging environment for those who want to learn more about the art of clay. This year there will also be a display from guest artist Hannah Kidd. \nJoin us on October 18 at 6pm to celebrate the opening of these three exhibitions. All are welcome at this free event and light refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:The Great Haulage Feat 1905-06: The Removal of the Wakanui Mill
DESCRIPTION:At nearly 16.5 metres tall and weighing 260 tonnes\, the huge wooden Wakanui Flour Mill was hauled 10.5km from its original site at Whakanui to the corner of Kermode and West Street over 18 working days. \nTwo traction engines pulled the building forward with the help of hardwood rollers\, 10cm in diameter\, positioned over tramway tracks laid along the road. All existing machinery remained inside the building during its move and early predictions were that the Mill would never stand the strain of the journey\, in itself a mighty feat… \nCome along to our new exhibition to discover the incredible innovation and technology used to make this massive move almost 120 years ago.

SUMMARY:The Art of the Letter
DESCRIPTION:Before the advent of the internet\, communication between people separated by distance took place in the form of a letter. Paper\, pens\, ink and envelopes were basic requirements to form a link to family\, friends or colleagues\, sharing news of the best and worst kind. Anticipation built during days\, months or years of waiting\, not knowing what to expect until the letter finally arrived. \nThe Art of the Letter features a variety of written communications exhibited from the AM&HS collection along with tools\, equipment and furniture from across the years. Letter structure and purposes are explained alongside examples of the skilled penmanship\, now contested by the speed and convenience of modern-day living. \nCome and relive the magic and art of the written word.

SUMMARY:Colossal Squid: Freaky Features! | Te Ngū Tipua: Ngā Wāhanga Weriweri!
DESCRIPTION:Something big is coming to the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum this June…\nDespite being the largest squid on the planet\, the Colossal Squid is so rarely seen that only eight adult colossal squid have ever been scientifically reported. \nNow Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum\, in co-operation with Te Papa\, is set to reveal some of the fascinating science and wonderful secrets of one of New Zealand’s most significant natural history specimens. \nColossal Squid: Freaky Features! Te Ngū Tipua: Ngā Wāhanga Weriweri! centres around an interactive table displaying many different objects including the lens from an eye of the Colossal Squid\, part of a tentacle\, and a complete tiny squid; the miniature of its colossal relative. Touchable rotating models of a squid’s tentacle hook and the Colossal Squid’s beak are also on display. \nThe exhibition displays two documentaries which show life in the depths of the Southern Ocean\, and how the most complete Colossal Squid ever found ended up at Te Papa. \n  \nDeveloped and toured by Te Papa.

SUMMARY:Westerfield Camp - The Army Marches In
DESCRIPTION:During periods of World War II\, New Zealanders lived in fear of attack or invasion\, first by the Germans and later by the Japanese. This exhibition explores the forgotten story of Westerfield Military Camp located 19km inland from Ashburton\, established in 1941 to provide a mobile response to a feared invasion. \nIn 1942\, the Army marched into Westerfield in a great flurry of activity\, changed the 162 hectare landscape\, and then disappeared as fast as they came. Witness the stories\, photographs and memories from the fleeting life of Westerfield Camp shared through this exhibition.

SUMMARY:Humour Me - The Funny Side of Town
DESCRIPTION:While television sitcoms\, Instagram reels and Tik Tok videos are among the most popular forms of comedic entertainment today\, the humble printed cartoon has been providing New Zealanders with quick laughs for more than 160 years. \nAlthough the popularity of cartoons has waxed and waned over the years\, cartoonists have always been acute interpreters of public opinion\, conveying the public mood in a humorously exaggerated or satirical way. \nPolitical cartoons are often effective in capturing the essence of public personalities\, contemporary events and political issues. Whether they serve to stir the pot or encourage us to laugh at ourselves\, these cartoons can be important\, largely uncensored historical sources. \nHumour Me – The Funny Side of Town explores Hakatere Ashburton’s own rich cartooning heritage\, showcasing cartoons published in the Ashburton Guardian and various other short-lived newspapers/magazines about a variety of local issues. This exhibition also highlights the work of our district’s talented cartoonists\, including Sid Scales\, Frank H. Choat and Frank D. Choat.
