SUMMARY:Witching Words: A Poetry Competition
DESCRIPTION:Witching Words: A Poetry Competition invites visitors of all ages to step into a world where language shimmers and imagination leads the way. Inspired by the playful poetry of Margaret Mahy and the evocative illustrations of David Elliot\, this competition encourages you to create your own poem using words\, rhymes\, and ideas drawn from the Rokowhiria Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum exhibition\, The Word Witch – Flights of Fancy. \nChoose a poem or illustration that speaks to you\, then\, like a word witch at work\, mix and match language\, play with rhymes\, and create something wonderfully your own. Whether you craft a tiny spell\, tell a fun story\, or dream up something entirely unexpected\, Witching Words celebrates the joy of creativity and the magic of creating poetry. Let the poems you discover spark new ones of your own — and see where the magic takes you. \nOpen to all ages\, this competition will end on August 23 at a poetry event where entries will be judged by David Elliot. Select poems will be published fortnightly in The Ashburton Courier newspaper from April 16 onward. \nCollect your entry form from Rokowhiria Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum to start creating your masterpiece! \n  \nImage: David Elliot\, The Word Witch\, Inside Cover\, 2008/2009\, mixed media illustration on paper.

SUMMARY:Caught in the Moment: Guardian photographs of 1976
DESCRIPTION:What moments in time did the Ashburton Guardian photographers capture around Whakatere Ashburton throughout 1976? This selection of photographs from our large collection of Guardian negatives will take you on a journey across various aspects of life in our district 50 years ago. \nAlthough some of these images were published in the daily newspaper\, most weren’t and won’t have been seen before. Many of the photographs were taken to support a newsworthy story\, while some are a whole story in themselves. \nJoin us for the opening of this exhibition on Friday\, 29 May at 6pm. This will coincide with the opening of Matariki herenga waka: A mooring place for all canoes.  \nImage from the Ashburton Guardian negative collection\, 1 April 1976.

SUMMARY:Matariki herenga waka: A mooring place for all canoes
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Matariki in 2026\, the national theme Matariki herenga waka – For everyone welcomes all people to reflect on the year passed and prepare for the new year ahead. While national celebrations are held in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland – known as ‘the gathering place of many canoes’ – Whakatere Ashburton is also a community of many ‘canoes’: diverse people and identities who call this place home. \nFor this special exhibition\, Ashburton Intermediate School students decorated waka hourua to ‘sail’ through our space. Waka hourua were powerful double-hulled waka used for Pacific voyaging and migration to Aotearoa New Zealand. Here\, they represent everyone coming from their own backgrounds\, families\, and cultures but travelling together as a community. \nJoin us for the opening on Friday 29 May at 6pm!
